Another edition of the popular Agricultural Fair was completed as farmers from around Saipan showcased the fruits of their hard labor during the 26th staging of the event Saturday at the Civic Center in Susupe.

Hundreds, including nine-year-old Thomas Sanchez, flocked to the site and were amazed with everything on display, including exotic flowers, plants, and animals such as cows, pigs, goats, ducks, chickens, turkeys, and rabbits, among others.

“I like this because it’s fun,” Sanchez said. “My favorites are the cows because they’re the biggest [animals] here, but I also like the rabbits and the pigs.”

The livestock on hand amazed the many but did not steal the show as farmers also put on display of the variety of root crops, fruits, vegetables, and exotic plants grown on the island.

The highlight of the Mes Lancheros celebration also featured over 35 concession booths, mostly members of the SAFA Sabalu Market, that sold hot lunches, barbeque, cold drinks to cool off the heart from the searing afternoon sun, and traditional weaved items. A carnival ride was also set up for the enjoyment of youths.

Division of Agriculture director Donald Flores stressed that the success of the fair is all due to the hard labor of the farmers with the support of the Saipan Agricultural Fair Association, Department of Lands and Natural Resources, DOA, and sponsors.

“This is the fruit of the labor,” Flores said. “We’re very satisfied with everything and people just keep rolling in…they’re pleased wit the set up. It’s a nice way for families to spend their day and we’re all excited and happy.”

Organizers of the event had completed the hauling of all cattle by 10:30pm Friday night and closed plant division registration at about the same time. Entries in the plant division were then prepared for judging throughout Friday night to Saturday morning.

Flores said judging began as early as 6am Saturday.

A total of 34 individuals participated in the plant division competition, with William C. Ada winning the category for the second year in a row, taking the grand prize with 105 points. Juan C. Aguon placed first runner-up with 83 points, while Leonardo Tudela had 80 points for second runner-up. Serafin Tudela placed third runner-up with 57 points.

The fair also featured coconut husking and grinding competition as well as the greasy pole competition.

Other activities include cockfighting at the Saipan Cockfight Dome located along Middle Road Gualo Rai and Bingo.
