History books at Street Market again
By popular demand, the Historic Preservation Office will continue its book giveaway at the Garapan Street Market tonight, June 2.
In celebration of Historic Preservation Week, HPO will be giving away books about Northern Marianas history and culture. For every $6 minimum purchase with receipt from street market vendors issued that night and submitted at the Historic Preservation Office booth, customers can receive one book valued at $5-25, while supplies last.
Last week HPO distributed nearly 500 books at the Garapan Street Market. New titles will be available this week. Titles include Tiempon I Manmafo’na: Ancient Cha-morro Culture and History of the Northern Mariana Islands, Carolinians in the Mariana Islands, Saipan: The Ethnology of a War-Devastated Island, The Chamorros of the Mariana Islands, History of the Mission in the Mariana Islands: 1667-1673, and An Accountant of the Corvette L’Uranie’s Sojourn at the Mariana Islands, 1819.
A history trivia contest will also be held with prizes for the winners. “Tropical Blenz” with perform at 6:45pm and “Penena Ole’Vasa” at 8pm. The Historic Preservation Office will also display artifacts and information on Northern Marianas history.
The Garapan Street Market is held every Thursday, 6pm-10pm at American Memorial Park and offers a wide selection of foods, imported and local crafts, novelties and free live entertainment.
