The Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands disclosed during its monthly meeting on Wednesday that it will play host to a women’s basketball league that may possibly kick off in two weeks.

Heading the league will be BANMI board member Debbie Gerads, who said during the meeting that three teams already have shown interest in playing in the league.

Another two teams were added to the field after BANMI president Mike Muna and fellow board member Elias Rangamar expressed interest in fielding teams.

In hopes of promoting women’s basketball in the Northern Marianas, BANMI board member Mike White raised the possibility of the association subsidizing the financial needs of the league, which all the members agreed on resulting in teams needing to pay an entrance fee of only $200.

Gerard, however, said that players who have yet to get settled into a team may sign up as individuals with a fee of $20.

Muna also echoed the need to reach to the community for support and invites any individual or business to assist with promoting women’s basketball by sponsoring a team or the league.
