HSBC economist keynotes Chamber meeting today
The chief economist of Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corp., George Leung, will be the keynote speaker of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce’s monthly membership meeting to be held today at the Giovanni’s of the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
Leung will make a presentation on how Micronesia fits into the growing economy of the Asian region. Leung has more than 20 years of experience as an economist and as a professional in various sectors and is a renowned economist specializing in the economy of greater China.
Prior to joining HSBC, Leung worked as a chief financial officer in a food manufacturing company, was a senior policy officer in charge of budget appraisal and energy policy at the Australian government and a was a university lecturer in economics.
Leung is an appointee of the Hong Kong SAR government, holding several posts in some boards of public institutions which the Pacific Economic Cooperation (HK) Committee, the Advisory Board of Hong Kong Baptist University, School of Business. He holds a Master Degree in Economics from the University of Toronto.
“We’re extremely fortunate to be able to bring an expert economist of this caliber to speak on Saipan. It’s a rare opportunity for us to explore how our islands fit into the regional economy,” said Chamber president Alex Sablan.
“The economy is of course the critical issue of the year, and this meeting is one more activity in a series we’re sponsoring—like the recent Marianas Roundtable-to help our community better deal with serious economic issues.”
The Chamber’s monthly meeting has been moved today to accommodate this special presentation. Doors open at 11:30am but due to limited seating capacity, the Chamber urges members and guests to make reservations in advance by calling the Chamber office at 233-7152.
