Two-minute chase leads to arrest of carnapper
A woman who was driving a stolen car fell to the hands of authorities after a two-minute road chase between her and the vehicle’s custodian who spotted her in Garapan yesterday afternoon.
SAS Moving and Storage owner and general manager George M. Fleming Jr. spotted the woman heading southbound on Beach Road across McDonald’s restaurant at about 2:30pm.
Fleming, who was driving his Harley Davidson bike, then chased the black Toyota Highlander that was stolen from the parking lot of the Riviera Hotel about two weeks ago. Fleming’s client owns the car, and his company was supposed to ship the vehicle to Korea before it was stolen.
“She was running away from me. She really stepped on the gas pedal,” Fleming said.
Upon reaching the vicinity of the Horiguchi Building, the woman turned left and headed to Middle Road, where she continued heading southbound, narrated Fleming. The bike-riding businessman managed to pull away from the car. He then kept on blocking the road, prompting the lady driver to pull over.
Fleming said the woman had three female passengers. He said all of them, including the driver, were Chinese-looking. The driver’s passengers left the scene.
Police responded to the site after Fleming called for assistance. Fleming said police arrested the stolen vehicle’s driver, who had no driver’s license and identification card in her possession.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric David could not be reached for interview regarding the incident. The identity of the woman has yet to be ascertained.
