Jagged Ice earned the first finals slot in the ongoing 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament after winning two of the six matches it played against Lemon Lime Wednesday night at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

Jagged Ice’s opponent in the finals was determined last night after Mango Orange and Gold Rush went head to head. Details of the match wasn’t available as of press time.

Jagged Ice won 10 of its matches throughout the tournament to finish with a tournament best win-loss record of 10-8.

Their finals ticket was ensured after winning two men’s doubles matches, with Sibley Santos and Buddy Garote taking credit for a win, and Roy Pangelinan and captain Jorge Olanda accounting for the other.

Santos and Garote looked sharp against Alfredo Quiroz and Perry Cacdac, and drew much applause with well-placed hits before claiming the match, 8-2.

For their part, Pangelinan and Olanda had a tougher time but still had the same result as they managed to hold off the push of Dodong Espanola and Dong Lacbayo, 8-6.

Lemon Lime, meanwhile, was successful in a women’s doubles match, the men’s singles, the mixed doubles, and the men’s doubles.

The duo of Joy Minor and Ligaya Paculanag was too much to handle and easily stopped youth netter Vivian Lee and veteran Cleofe Santos, 8-1, in their women’s doubles bout, while Espanola had his way in the men’s singles and went on cruise control before capping his night with an 8-0 victory over Eric Mahinay.

Team captain Peter Loyola and Maru Dela Torre also put up an impressive performance show and trounced Mario Buensuceso and Vangie Espanola, 8-0, in the mixed doubles, while youth standout Russell Buenaventura teamed up with Ruben Leynes to beat Phil Kalen and Romy Sotto by the same score.

With their 4-2 victory, Lemon Lime improved their win-loss card to 8-10.

No games will be played today. The championship matches will be played tomorrow beginning at 5pm, with the awards banquet following.

The Powerade Team Tennis Tournament is sponsored by Coca Cola Beverage Co. and is organized by the Fil-American Tennis Association.
