For the past few months in 2005, the Marianas Hawaii Liaison Office strove to improve its staff efficiency through conferences, seminars, and the raising of knowledge in health and safety standards.

Liaison officer Jeannette D. Sablan, including most of the employees at the Liaison Office, attended a number of events to improve the efficiency levels at the MHLO. Sablan said this trend will continue throughout the year.

For instance, in Feb. 24, 2005, Sablan together with administrative officer Margaret S. McQuay attended a Women’s Conference, which stressed interpersonal and managerial skills.

On March 3, Belvilyn T. Fleming and Nadine H. Sablan attended an ANA Grant Workshop that covered Language and Socio-Economic subjects. The workshop re-instilled the grant writing skills that is necessary to obtain and secure a federal grant.

On April 1, six MHLO employees successfully completed the standard First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) class.

Certificates of completion were given to utilization reviewer Elizabeth W. Pastor, medical referral coordinator Eddie L. Villanueva, field supervisor Edward C. Dela Cruz, and medical referral assistants Richard S. Rabago, Andres L. Pua, and Fujiwara R. Suel.

Sablan stressed the importance of being knowledgeable in CPR as an important tool to possess when dealing with patients on a daily basis.

Sablan said she was pleased to announce to the Office of Personnel Management that the entire staff at the Marianas Hawaii Liaison Office took random drug tests in April 2005 and everyone tested negative for drug use.

Sablan commented that a drug-free working environment is a safe workplace especially when the job entails assisting CNMI residents in Hawaii.

On June 8, an MHLO coordinator and a supervisor attended a seminar on “How to Become a More Effective Supervisor” sponsored by Career Track, a leading training and career program.

Villanueva said that he highly recommended these types of seminars to everybody, including anyone in a leadership and management role. He commented that the seminar was helpful and taught how to lead a body of employees towards becoming effective and productive goal and accomplishment oriented staff.

Dela Cruz said that he would recommend people to attend these types of seminars as they not only inform the participant and energize them, it taught about ingenious ways that people can interact and communicate effectively.

The MHO also acknowledged the Secretary of Public Health and Medical Referral Saipan office for their continuous support helping the Hawaii operations run smoothly. (PR)
