The kick-off dates for the 2005 Saipan Rotary Summer Youth Basketball League and the 2005 BANMI Budweiser Cup have been pushed back and instead will get underway early next month.

BANMI official and Rotary league coordinator Elias Rangamar said yesterday that the opening tip-off of the Budweiser Cup has been moved to July 9 while the start of the 18-and-under Rotary league will be after the Liberation Day celebrations.

Rangamar said the move will give teams, especially those participating in the Rotary league, more time to get uniforms ready as well as to make final touches and tune-ups in preparation for the highly-competitive leagues.

All teams in the Rotary league must have uniforms by the opening ceremony.

The Rotary league was originally scheduled to tip off today while the Bud Cup was scheduled to begin this Wednesday.

So far, 18 teams have already showed interest in competing in the 18-and-under cage league, including the San Antonio Sixers I and II, Garapan Rollers I, II, and III, Matansa Sparks, Ol’Aces, Tanapag Warriors, Toyota Camry, the Junior National Team, Hoops, Bwibwis, Capitol Hill Breeze, Saipan Southern High School, Saints, and another team from San Antonio. The newest members include Kagman and the G-Super Sonics.

All players listed on the team roster must not turn 19 years old before Sept. 30, 2005.

Organizers stressed that teams failing to pay the entrance fee will not be allowed to play until clearing the requirement.

Meanwhile, confirming their return to defend their Bud Cup crown is two-time champion Toyota, which will be competing against Ol’Aces II, Nissan Titans, and Wells Fargo, among others.
