Mobil Mythical 5 is complete package
The 2005 Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Co-ed Basketball League came to a close last June 18, but not before league officials recognized the top players from the teams that participated in the cagefest.
Leading the elite team, dubbed the Mythical 5, was point guard Elmer Esdrelon of champion Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach.
The do-it-all former Tinian Dynasty and Casino Basketball League most valuable player was the “money man” for Dai-Ichi, calling the shots and dictating the tempo of the game each time he was on the court, and captained the team to a league-best 8-1 finish, earning the pennant crown.
Esdrelon went on to average 19 points per game after canning 152 points in eight games.
Joining Esdrelon in the backcourt is scoring phenom Andres “Jhun” Estolas, who led host Mobil to a third-straight runner-up finish.
Despite already known as Mobil’s top gun, defenses were still not able to slow down the small guard, who proved that size didn’t matter and tortured opposing teams en route to lighting up the scoreboard for a whopping 221 points in just seven games.
With consistent performances each time he step foot on the floor, Estolas finished as the league’s top scorer, averaging 31.5 points per outing, and even thrilled the crowd by pumping in an eye-popping 59 points last May 10 in a down-the-wire 115-110 victory over 2003 champion Pacific Development, Inc.
Leo Factor of Microl-Toyota and Bogs Dayrit of 2004 champions Aqua Resort Club also made it to the elite squad and were selected as the top two forwards in the league.
Just as his last name signifies, Factor was indeed Microl-Toyota’s biggest factor throughout the season and finished with a respectable average of 17.3 points per game, scoring 156 points in nine games, capping his run with 32 points in his team’s final game of the year.
For his part, Dayrit put up double-digit performances for ARC in each of the eight games he saw action in during the regular season, and accounted for a total of 129 points for an average of 16.1 points.
The center position was again topped by swat king Jawn Joyner, who played a key role in Commonwealth Ports Authority’s best finish in Mobil play with a 7-2 win-loss card.
In addition to his countless stops at the defensive end, Joyner was the other half of CPA’s one-two punch, averaging 17.4 points per game after working his magic for 122 points in seven games, giving coach Mike Muna something to smile about.
