The Saipan Little League All-Stars booked a ticket to this month’s Asia-Pacific Regional Tournament in Fukuoka, Japan after completing a sweep of the CNMI District Tournament held on Rota over the weekend.

The local hardballers went 4-0 in elimination play on Friday and Saturday before capping its domination of neighboring islands Tinian and Rota with a 21-2 win over the latter on Sunday to bag the championship.

In other sports news for the week just passed, the Northern Yankees bagged the pennant championship of the 2005 Saipan Major League, Strawberry-Melon took home the gold in the 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament, Century Insurance ruled the 17th season of the PBA-CBC Thursday Night League, and Jess Wabol carded the score to beat in the Championship Flight of last weekend’s 3rd Annual Family Fun Day Golf Tournament.

Northern Yankees probably are feeling mighty proud of themselves following their 5-3 shellacking of rival Miller Lite Brewers in the pennant tiebreaker held last Wednesday at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.

The same could be said of Richard Asuncion’s Strawberry-Melon, which took care of business by defeating Jagged Ice in the finals, 4-2, to hoist the Powerade title last June 23.

Century Insurance players, meanwhile, accepted their seventh Thursday Night League plum last June 28 at the Capitol Bowling Center. The team outpointed second-place Verizon Nitro DSL and Multi-Line Supply for the first-place trophy.

Wabol, for his part, finished tied with fellow veteran par-buster Jeff Taylor in the LaoLao Bay golf event but took first place nonetheless after entering into a gentleman’s agreement with the 2004 champion of the Northern Marianas College Foundation Open.
