The CNMI Junior League All-Stars and Jovie Saulog were the finest in sports last week.

The Junior Leaguers made their home islands proud after securing a trip to Taylor, Michigan last Thursday following their 12-11 win over Guam at the Municipal Baseball Field on Tinian.

The gritty win capped the CNMI’s perfect 5-0 run in the tournament, which included a four-game sweep of the eliminations against the Hong, Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, and Guam.

The CNMI Big and Senior League All-Stars, however, were not as fortunate. The Big Leaguers had their hearts broken by first-day victim Guam when they were nipped, 5-3, in the championship Thursday. The Guamanians are now headed to Easley, South Carolina.

Also earning a ticket to Bangor, Maine are the Guam Senior Leaguers after the boys from the southernmost tip of the Marianas chain obliterated the Philippines, 12-3, Thursday also on Tinian.

Saulog, for his part, shone in last weekend’s 2005 Saipan MX Championships held at the Cowtown Raceway Park in Marpi. The Philippines’ No. 1 rider was named overall champion, succeeding compatriot and Philippine No. 2 Popeye Rubi, following two first-place finishes and one runner-up. The first-time Saipan MX competitor won both the Veterans Class and 250cc Expert then finished second to New Zealand’s James “Robo” Robinson in the 125cc Expert.

The 2005 Saipan Rotary Club Summer Youth Basketball League also kicked off last Monday with 13 teams vying for the championships. The first two play dates have seen San Antonio, Sixers I, Breeze, and Sparks win at the expense of Garapan Rollers III, Hoops, Sixers II, and Camry.

The week also saw Darrel Roligat of athletics compete in the IAAF World Youth Championship in Morocco and Jeff Race captain Pacific Oceania against powerhouse South Korea in the semis of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in Seoul.
