Twenty-six councilors from Osaka, Japan are expected to visit the CNMI this weekend to honor the memory of their countrymen who died on the island during World War II.

The group would be made up of Osaka city councilors from the Liberal Democratic Party and the Citizen’s Club. They would arrive on Aug. 8 for a two-day visit.

One of the councilors from Osaka City, Shinji Fukushima, said 2005 marks the 60th year of the end of World War II.

“The participants of this visit wish to make this trip in memory of those who died in the war,” he said.

Fukushima said the visiting councilors will be praying for peace and promote friendship and goodwill between Japan and the United States.

The delegates will stay at the Hotel Nikko Saipan and they will be paying a courtesy call on Gov. Juan N. Babauta on Aug. 9 at 10am. From the Governor’s Office, they will proceed to the Central Pacific War Memorial and would offer flowers in Marpi.

He said they would also try to squeeze in their schedule visits to Suicide Cliff and Banzai Cliff, the same monuments that Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited two months ago.

In the afternoon, the delegates would visit the Last Command Post in Marpi and then will proceed to offer flowers and wreaths at the American Memorial Park’s Court of Honor.
