Local farmers who want to gain more knowledge about livestock farming may take advantage of a series of workshops that the Northern Marianas College–Cooperative Research Extension and Education Services is planning to hold on the three islands of the CNMI.

NMC-CREES resident veterinarian Allan Sabaldica said the first Livestock Workshop would be held on Aug. 29 to 31 on Saipan, while the islands of Rota and Tinian will host the workshop next month. The Rota workshop will be on Sept. 1 to 2; Tinian will have its one-day workshop on Sept. 6.

Sabaldica said the first day of the workshop would focus on common diseases afflicting livestock in the Northern Marianas, expounding on disease control and its treatments. The second day will expose the participants to practical observations on livestock. The CNMI Paravets will accompany the participants.

The paravets include those who recently completed the Paravet Program Project of NMC-CREES. The CNMI early this year welcomed 11 new paravets into its fold, including graduates from Saipan, Rota and Tinian. The workshop, said Sabaldica, also intends to promote the CNMI paravets and the Animal Health Program of NMC-CREES.

Sabaldica said CREES would be showing and demonstrating to participants how to diagnose a disease, explain the cause of the disease, and how to prevent it and treat it. During the training, he said, he would be distributing a survey form that would consist of different topics that the participants can choose to learn for future training or workshops related to livestock farming.

He said another workshop would be scheduled this September on Saipan, Tinian and Rota as a follow-up to the Alternative Waste Management Project presented during the recent Pacific Island Environmental Conference 2005.

Sabaldica is also inviting the public to provide CREES any suggestions and comments regarding future workshops. Any comments can be forwarded to NMC-CREES.

The public may email Sabaldica at allans@nmcnet.edu or contact him through 433-0639 for further information.
