Man On The Street
How do you feel about the current state of the power situation on the island since Gov. Juan N. Babauta declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.? Is it getting better? Worse? Do you agree with the government’s position that privatization will solve matters?

It’s really a problem. We are very much affected. The power outages can damage our appliances. My personal computer’s motherboard just got affected and now I have to buy a new one. If ever CUC got privatized we hope the services will improve. Surprisingly, these power outages only increased my bills more than ever.

In my place we are not that affected but here in the office we are. Maybe I feel I’m not really affected because most of the time, I am at work. If it gets privatized, we really don’t know what will happen but whatever happens I hope it will be okay.

We are affected somehow. Sometimes you have a schedule but due to the outages you cannot do it, so you have to change your sked. You really have to adjust to the schedule of the power outage. Privatized? I believe it will improve. Service will be different, I guess. Everybody will be paying their fair share. Power is privatized all over the world, why not the CNMI?

We are very affected with these outages. If I have a business, it would be greatly affected. Like with what I do, in my work, the project that needs to be done in one day now can be completed in at least two days. Imagine that? Privatizing the utilities corporation may have advantages and disadvantages to the CNMI people. The fee may increase or not, we don’t know.

I really am not affected because my husband and I stay in a hotel that provides generator when power outages occur. But for the others, like my friends and their businesses, they are very much affected with the schedules. They would have to adjust their time with the problem. If CUC gets privatized, maybe the services will improve.
