Another interesting week in the books
The bulk of the CNMI Delegation to the 2005 Palau South Pacific Mini Games returned to home soil Saturday morning with 30 medals to show for, Sasaki Oliver topped the 10th Annual Tournament of Champions, while CNMI continues its push to host the 2006 Micronesian Games as another interesting week is in the books.
Hosting the Micro Games gained much support the past few days as Gov. Juan N. Babauta and the legislature expressed support for the push.
After meeting with NMASA president Michael White and Division of Sports and Recreation director Tony Rogolifoi, Babauta expressed that although much work must be done to prepare the CNMI for hosting the Games, the job can be done and it has his full support.
DCCA secretary Juan L. Babauta also spearheaded a presentation to the legislature, providing feasibility details on hosting the Games, and told the Saipan Tribune that Speaker Benigno Fitial and other members of the House returned with positive feedback.
Sasaki edged mentor Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho in a one-hole playoff to take top honors in the TOC at the Lao Lao Bay Golf Resort, and also won the random drawing to represent the TOC in Perth, Australia for the 2006 Johnnie Walker Classic Pro-Am.
Meanwhile, men’s and women’s doubles champions were crowned in the 3rd Annual Verizon Tennis Cup at the American Memorial Park tennis courts, and singles action is currently ongoing.
The event, organized by the Saipan Tennis Associaiton, will conclude on Aug. 20 with an awards banquet.
Action in the Saipan Rotary Summer Youth Basketball League also continued while the Saipan Major League playoffs has yet to resume due to Mother Nature’s wet weather.
