The Marianas High School’s Marianas Youth Welcome All Visitors Enthusiastically Club began the year by cleaning up the beach from Sugar Dock to the World Resort Hotel on Sept. 3, 2005.

MHS MY WAVE president Na Lim Heo said the beach cleanup “was a great idea [because] by doing so, we will also be able to sustain our tourism [industry].”

Heo said each member was given a trash bag that was categorized into different types of trash—plastic, paper, glass, and other miscellaneous.

“We found diapers, party wastes, cans, etc. throughout the site,” he said.

The group also engaged in a tree-panting activity after picking up the trash for two hours.

The group cited the help given by the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, Division of Agriculture, and the Saipan Mayor’s Office of Saipan.

Heo said that, for this year, the MY WAVE Club members and advisers are planning to go to Bali to enhance their knowledge of tourism.

“The effort to maintain tourism is very crucial, especially nowadays with the decline in our tourism here in the CNMI. Since tourism is one of the main industries on the island, it has a direct effect on the CNMI’s economy. By supporting and educating the younger generations, they will be able to carry on the industry into the future,” Heo said. (PR)
