Tanapag cemetery expansion lot made available
Marianas Public Lands Authority last week officially turned over 2.8 hectares for use in expanding the Tanapag Public Cemetery.
MPLA board of directors chair Ana Demapan-Castro, Gov. Juan N. Babauta, Bishop Thomas A. Camacho and other dignitaries attended the turnover ceremony.
MPLA public information officer Ed Arriola said the project would alleviate the congested condition of the Chalan Kanoa Cemetery.
Arriola said the governor requested for the MPLA to designate the property to be used for the cemetery on Jan. 27, 2005 and the request was approved in an MPLA special board meeting held on April 27, 2005 on Tinian.
He said the MPLA board of directors is planning to assist everyone involved in the project, which would be under the Department of Lands and Natural Resources.
Demapan-Castro said she is appreciates the efforts and vision of the governor and the individuals who have been a part of the new cemetery design.
Over 8,000 square meters of public land has been designated by the government for the expansion of the Tanapag graveyard to solve the overcrowding at the Chalan Kanoa cemetery.
The 8,099-square meter parcel of land, located adjacent to the Tanapag cemetery, would now expand the graveyard to accommodate burials from other villages when the Chalan Kanoa cemetery reaches its maximum capacity. The existing cemetery has a total area of 19,183 square meters.
