Twenty more police officers are expected to be promoted soon, according to Department of Public Safety Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela.

In an interview with the Saipan Tribune, Tudela disclosed that he has been working for the promotion of these 20 more officers to further boost the morale of the personnel in the department.

Tudela refused to provide details about the “new batch” as processing of papers are still ongoing.

On Friday, the commissioner promoted 51 police officers and firefighters who have already been in service for more than five years.

“At least during my one-year period [as commissioner] I accomplished one of my priorities which is to boost the morale of the personnel,” said Tudela, who was appointed to run the department in Nov. 2004.

It was the first time in many years that DPS initiated such a massive promotion with accompanying salary increases for the change in ranks.

Some officers questioned why Tudela is doing the massive promotion when he possibly has one more month to stay in the department.

But the commissioner explained that when he was tapped to lead the department last year, among of his priorities was to promote deserving officers and firefighters.

He stated that it took him five months to complete the processing of the papers for the promotion of the 51 police officers and firefighters.

When asked if he will be re-appointed by the new administration, Tudela refused to comment.

Tudela rose from the ranks and the Babauta administration appointed him as commissioner when Edward Camacho quit last year. (Ferdie de la Torre)
