G-Rollers are Division I champions
The Garapan Rollers went undefeated during the elimination and playoff rounds and capped off a successful campaign by winning the Division I championship of the 2005 Northern Youth Basketball Association Tournament yesterday at the Garapan Basketball Court.
The G-Rollers had their game faces on and dominated the Capitol Hill Stars en route to a convincing 33-20 win in the title game.
With all the marbles on the line, the G-crew played tough defense and kept the Stars in check throughout the first half to open up a 16-8 lead.
The Stars tried to rally in the second half, breaking out of their cold shooting and heating the net for 12 points, but it was not enough as Mike Bondoc broke away for six straight points in the end to lift his team to the 13-point victory.
Bondoc played well and finished with a game-high 10 points, while Dino Palacios added six points.
Douglas Dillay and Genesis Mamaril led the Stars with four points apiece.
In the consolation bout, the Matansa Sparks got a strong performance from Mart Sablan to beat the Sugar King Shooting Stars, 31-17.
Sablan had 10 points while Dave Jones and Eli Pangelinan chipped in four points apiece.
Meanwhile, G-II took home third place in Division II after stopping the Stars, 53-48.
The G-Rollers opened with a bang as the speedy Nate Mateo showed off his shooting touch by knocking down two triples and gunning for 16 points in the first half, while Champ Untalan and Juan Diaz combined for 12 points as the G-crew opened a 14-point advantage at the break, 34-20.
The Stars, however, refused to go down without a fight and came storming back in the second half. Manuel Matagolai erupted for 12 points and the team outscored the G-Rollers, 28-19, but their effort was still not enough to overcome the deficit.
Mateo finished with 21 points while Josh Moses added 10 points to lead G-II.
Matagolai led all scorers with 23 points while Trevor Ogumoro added 10 points.
The Sparks also won third place in Division III after edging the G-Rollers I, 80-78.
Ben Jones swooshed five bombs from downtown and finished with 23 points, while Jesus Norita scored in double figures in both halves to finish with 21 points for the Sparks.
Pistol Pete Iguel led G-I with a game-high 29 points while Tyrone Omar and Syl Tellei punched in 14 and 12 points. Sandy Borja and Joe Acosta also chipped in 11 and 10 points.
On Saturday, the Stars defeated G-I to reach the finals, 99-92, with Dan Barcinas taking over for 44 points. Kevin Cequena also had a solid night for G-I with 39 points.
The Stars faced G-Rollers II for the title last night after G-II cruised by the Sparks, 66-43.
In Division II, the sparks had their way against the Bwibwiis, 43-33.
