Cabalen, LIPS keep perfect marks
Cabalen-RP Construction/Transamerica and LIPS-Mobil/RHT kept their perfect run going and Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense-Flor A. Miranda/C&J Sign put up a strong performance as action in the ongoing 2005 Budweiser-Coca Cola 6th Annual UFO Inter-Organizational Basketball League continued Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
In the opener, Cabalen notched its fourth win in as many chances to hold the lead in the B Division with a 103-86 victory over Bayani-HBR International.
Cabalen’s Ronald Delos Reyes, Ed Palma, and George Barbo were punching in points left and right in the early goings, combining for 23 of the team’s 32 points as they led by 13 points after just 10 minutes of play.
Bayani, however, was able to move closer in the second period as Rowel Tordilla broke loose for 11 points, spearheading a 24-19 run that brought Bayani to within eight points, 43-51, at the break.
Tordilla continued to have the hot hand for another 10 points and Bayani got a strong nine-point effort from Edwin Guzman as the team inched closer after three periods. Heading into the payoff period, Cabalen was clinging to a seven-point breathing room, 75-68.
Tordilla did his best and went berserk for another 14 points, but his efforts was well overmatched as Cabalen closed with a 28-18 run to remain perfect.
Delos Reyes and Palma led Cabalen with 20 and 14 points, while Darwin Barbo, Sonny Ranola, and Dalewin Cortez each finished with 10 or more points.
Tordilla was hot all night long and poured in 41 points and 11 rebounds to lead Bayani while Guzman and George Poquiz had 14 and 13 points.
In the second game, Rowell Aranda led five LIPS players in double figures as the team used a strong fourth quarter push to beat Cavite-Country House, 112-101.
LIPS trailed 77-79 heading into the final 10 minutes of play, but turned things around and leaned on the scoring of Andres “Jhun” Estolas to leave with the win. Estolas tormented the opposition for 14 points in the fourth period, as LIPS outgunned Cavite for the win.
Aranda and Estolas finished with 31 and 25 points, while Kevin Cequena, James Abuy, and Melvin Villarin also finished in double figures.
Randy Arconado and Joy Dayrit paced Cavite with 17 and 15 points, while Chris Domingo and Kevin Aldan supported them with double-digit scoring.
In the final game, SIP remained a half game behind Cabalen with a 94-78 victory over MDX Amateur Radio Club-Armatech.
