Patriotic oral essay contest winners bared

The VFW Voice of Democracy is an annual patriotic oral essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

VFW selects a patriotic theme each year for the competition. Then students in grades nine through 12 are offered the opportunity to vie for a $25,000 scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C.

In addition, at each of the first three levels of competition contestants can win an assortment of prizes.

The Patriot’s Pen, which is also sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, is a written essay contest for students in grades six through eight. As with the VOD, the national VFW selects a patriotic theme each year for the competition. Students at this level compete for a ten thousand dollar scholarship.

The Post 3457 VOD winners are the following: 1st place Ray Anthony Duenas of Saipan Southern High School; 2nd place Ferleen V. Esmundo of Saipan Southern High School; and 3rd place Mia Jones of Marianas High School.

Patriot’s Pen winners are: 1st place Jeremiah S. Perez of Calvary Christian Academy, 2nd place David K. Paek of Calvary Christian Academy, 3rd place Rosalyn M. Tudela of Calvary Christian Academy.

In addition the Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher Award was won by Jaime R. Vergara, a sixth grade teacher at San Vicente Elementary School and a Saipan Tribune columnist.

The first place winners in each of the contests will move on to compete at the district (Guam and the CNMI) level competition. (PR)
