Glaze-Komatsu takes BSEA crown
After taking second place last year to the tandem of Laura Burley and Linda Anastacio, the dynamic duo of Aleta Glaze and Erika Komatsu resurfaced to take the BSEA Two-Player Grass Volleyball Tournament at American Memorial Park in Garapan.
Volleyballs filled the air on Saturday as the area’s top men and women dueled on the verdant carpet a stone’s throw from the Philippine Sea, and Glaze-Komatsu capitalized on their skills and patience to sail through the tournament with impressive wins that lead to their dispatching of Anastacio and new teammate Benylynn Mettao, 15-11.
Glaze-Komatsu wasted little time in the daylong affair, but they started out with a first-round bye that gave them a slight advantage in the nine-team bracket. The duo earned its first win in the double-elimination tournament when they dispatched the powerful pairing of Kelley Butcher and Kadya Peter, 15-9.
Their second win didn’t come easy as they had to rally from a 13-5 deficit to beat Laurie Peterka and Heather Kennedy by scoring 10 unanswered points to advance further, 15-13. Glaze-Komatsu then faced their first battle with Mettao-Anastacio, in which they won with a convincing 15-7 score before eliminating them from the tournament in their rematch in the finals.
Mettao-Anastacio had to work a little harder for a spot in the championship, but the duo advanced into the second round of the tournament with a first-round bye. They followed that up with a win over the talented team of Nikki Shryack and Rika Matsumoto, 15-5, before nearly falling to Private Schools Volleyball League MVP Lena Guzman and 2005 CNMI Mini Games player Melissa Halaby, 15-12.
From there Mettao-Anastacio fell to the losers’ bracket after there first meeting with Glaze-Komatsu, 15-7, but they rebounded with a narrow 16-14 victory over indoor stars Frances Somorang and Sheila Francisco to earn a rematch in the finals.
