Public School System officials are currently in Washington, D.C. attending a series of conferences that would upgrade and enhance educational programs in the CNMI.

Commissioner of Education Rita H. Inos, Federal Programs advisor Tim Thornburgh, Garapan Elementary School principal Yvonne Gomez, and Koblerville Elementary School principal Eric Evangelista left the island Monday. The conferences are scheduled from Nov. 28 to Dec. 8.

Acting Commissioner of Education David M. Borja said two of the central staff office employers also joined the delegation. Borja immediately cleared that the trip is federally funded.

He said the CNMI PSS was invited to the two conferences namely the Office of English Language Acquisition 4th Annual Conference and a conference that would tackle the U.S. Department of Education policy changes.

The OELA Summit IV started yesterday and will run until Dec. 2 with a theme “Celebrate Our Rising Stars Summit.” The conference will focus on critical issues affecting English language learners, their parents, teachers, schools, and communities. It also aimed to determine how No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 continues to provide the vision, tools, and means for closing the achievement gap for English language learners.

The English Language Learners conference, said Borja, is necessary for the CNMI because the program is essential to the goals of the PSS in pursuit to more quality education in the Commonwealth. The ELL program of the PSS is important because in the CNMI there are large numbers of students who are not as proficient as others in English as a medium of communication.
