Gov. Juan N. Babauta has designated Dr. James U. Hofschneider as acting secretary of the Department of Public Health, implying that the official had vacated his regular post at the government agency.

In a memorandum, Babauta designated Hofschneider in an acting capacity beginning Dec. 10, 2005 to Jan. 8, 2006.

Before the designation, Hofschneider assumed the Public Health Department’s top post, after successfully hurdling the Senate confirmation process on his appointment to the Babauta Cabinet.

Unconfirmed reports said Hofschneider had opted to retire like many other government officials.

The department, however, gave no confirmation as to whether Hofschneider actually retired or simply resigned from his post as DPH secretary.

Following the victory of Covenant Party’s Benigno Fitial and Timothy Villagomez in the recent gubernatorial election, the party chairman, Martin Manglona, called on all government appointees to tender their courtesy resignation to allow the incoming administration to choose key persons who will hold Cabinet and other government positions.

Fitial and Villagomez will assume their respective offices beginning Jan. 9, after a formal inauguration ceremony that will be held at American Memorial Park.
