After months of preparation, the 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League will finally get underway as teams will begin their push for the coveted title tonight at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

League coordinator Joey Dela Cruz said yesterday that all is set for the opening of the league, which will feature 15 teams.

Having the honors of opening the season are last year’s top two teams as defending champion No Zone—formerly Department of Public Safety II—takes on runner-up Department of Labor at 6:30pm.

With Ed Diaz, Jerry Ayuyu, Carl Hocog, and Ned Norita, among many others, pulling all the tricks last season, No Zone was able to turn their season around and work their way to the championship series courtesy of big upsets before beating Labor.

The second game is also expected to be hard fought, as reigning pennant champion Public School System takes on former champion Northern Marianas College at 8pm.

Also looking to dethrone No Zone are the Commonwealth Health Center, DPS Fire, DPS Enforcers, Legislature, Division of Procurement and Supply, Office of the Public Auditor, Saipan Mayor’s Office, Commonwealth Ports Authority, Department of Public Works, Tinian, and the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.

Action continues this Thursday with the Enforcers taking on Tinian at 6:30 pm and DCCA battling Legislature at 8pm.

Dela Cruz said games would be played every week from Monday to Thursday. The regular season schedule will be provided later this week.

The 2006 action features a single-round regular season, after which the top six teams will advance to the playoffs. The pennant champion and regular season runner-up will receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs, while the other four teams will fight for the two remaining semifinals tickets.
