Car sales down by 20 percent

Car sales during the month of January this year posted a 20.81-percent decline compared with the same month last year.

Statistics from the Commonwealth Auto Dealer’s Association showed that there were 118 cars sold last month; in January 2005, there were 149 sold vehicles.

CADA said local dealers sold 55 cars, 29 trucks, seven vans, and 27 sports utility vehicles last month.

Based on sales, Joeten Motors leads with 46 sold cars, Microl Corp. comes next with 42, and Triple J Motors, 30.

In terms of franchise, Toyota remains the CNMI motorists’ favorite, cornering 33 percent of the market.

CADA said there were 40 Toyota cars sold; Nissan, 22; Hyundai, 13; Honda and Mazda, 12 each; Ford, 9; Suzuki, 3; and Chevrolet and all others, one each.

Microl Corp. sells Toyota and Chevrolet while Joeten Motors sells Nissan, Ford, Honda, and Kia. Triple J Motors sells Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki, Subaru, and Mazda.

CADA has reported a 4.2-percent overall decline in car sales in 2005 compared to the previous year.

There were 1,544 sold cars in calendar year 2005 while in 2004, there were 1,612.
