Santos steals show in Marpi
Last of two parts
Franklin Santos took his little bike to the limit in Marpi on Sunday as he bagged a pair of first place finishes at the Cowtown Raceway Park during the Marianas Racing Association’s first points race of 2006 season.
Santos earned 50 points by taking both heats of the 60-65cc class to start the Year of the Dog with a tail wagging day, and left a cloud of dust in his wake when he took the checkered flag.
Youngster Jared Sablan was not all that far behind and earned 44 points for the runner-up as the only other rider in the division. Their purr from their mini-machines was a far cry from the roar of the big bikes, but their competitive spirits burned just as bright as they charged into the turns and challenged the jumps in much the same manner as the big boys.
The duo wasn’t the only pack of pint-sized pedal pushers as Juden Joyner, Patty Cepeda, and Kijay Ada went all out in the Peewee 50 Class. Joyner ruled the rough road with a pair of checkered flags in as many heats to take the early season lead with 50 points, while Cepeda scored back-to-back runner-ups for second place thus far with 44 points.
Ada was twice the third of three, but only trails fellow Peewees by a little bit with 40 points.
From two wheels to the quads, Britney Camacho picked up 50 points as she once again was the only rider of in the mini-ATV Class, while Edinna Cepeda and Devin Noisom rounded the circuit atop their Modified 80 and 50 machines, respectively.
Cepeda finished with 50 points for her efforts, while Noisom brought home 44 in their head-to-head competition.
While the little guys and girls were proving their mettle on the dirt, riders like Ton Alepuyo led the more seasoned riders of the Big Boys ATV Class with a pair of first place finishes.
While the hard charging Alepuyo came away with 50 points and first place overall, he will have his hands full with Henry Camacho, who managed 44 points on the day with a pair of also-rans.
