The Department of Public Safety cautioned the public yesterday about disastrous bush fires during this dry and windy season.

DPS spokesman Ken I. Concepcion said the DPS Division of Fire Forestry Section is asking people to exercise caution when burning things to avoid wildfires.

“Each of us has a role in preventing wild land fires and in protecting ourselves and our property from wild land fires,” Concepcion said.

He said fighting against unwanted wildfires protects the environment and natural resources.

The spokesman issued the following safety tips:

* Residents burning debris should have water ready in case the fire gets out of control. Be on the lookout for flying embers that might go with the wind and head elsewhere, and start another fire.

* Residents cleaning their yards should burn dry leaves and other debris in an empty barrow and within a clearance area of at least six feet away from their homes and other structures.

* Select your site/location wisely. If you are burning during dry season, it is best to avoid potential hazards.

* Know the outdoor burning regulations. If you are not sure if you can burn or not, call the DPS Division of Fire for more information at 664-9003/4 or 9032.
Concepcion advised the public to develop a checklist by following such simple rules.
“Remember, only you can prevent wildfires,” he added.
