All CNMI high school and college students are invited to participate in this year’s Division of Environmental Quality Environmental Awareness Week Marine Fashions Competition.

DEQ public information officer Reina Camacho said during the Rotary Club of Saipan weekly meeting Tuesday that the show, dubbed “Marine Fashions,” will feature wearable recyclable material designs.

The show will be held April 20, 6:30pm at the Garapan Street Market.

“The Marine Fashions only open to high school and college students ages 14 to 21,” she said.

Camacho said the event would be an excellent way to fundraise for the “prom,” “senior trip,” or club project.

She stressed, though, that the submissions should be the sole creation and inspiration, cut and sewn by the fashion team. She added that student groups could be student governments, science clubs, cultural clubs, freshman classes, sophomore classes, junior classes, or senior classes, language clubs, math clubs, honor societies, drug-free clubs, sports clubs, business clubs, dance clubs, yearbook clubs, music clubs, etc.

Participants are encouraged to design and wear outfits using recycled, old or used, materials.

“What qualifies? Just about anything. Old books, magazines, newspapers, phone books, junk mail, homework, pens, markers, post-it notes. Old electronic equipment, appliances, CDs, tapes, records, floppy disks. Old packing, peanuts, cardboard, bubble wrap. Used duct tape, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, grocery bags, trash bags, old socks, mini-blinds, curtains or tablecloths,” according to the application form for the contest.

Prizes at stake will be $500, $300, and $200 for the winning teams while all participants will receive a certificate recognizing their talent and creativity.

The deadline for submission of the designs for the fashion competition is on March 31. All designs must be submitted at the DEQ office in Gualo Rai.
