NMC-CREES holds Rota Annual Agriculture Fair
The Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research Extension and Education Services marked another successful project on Rota—the Rota Annual Agriculture Fair.
The NMC-CREES staff members were once again judges at the livestock and crops division competition at the annual fair. The event was held Friday, March 17, at the Sinapalo Church ground area.
NMC president Tony V. Deleon Guerrero commended the Rota instruction site for the successful event. He said NMC’s Dr. Joaquin Tenorio, a college resident entomologist on Saipan, Dr. Allan Sabaldica, the livestock scientist from NMC Tinian, and Alejandro Badilles, the CNMI Integrated Pest Management coordinator stationed at NMC Rota, were on hand to judge the event.
The NMC-CREES showcased an array of various programs, exhibits, and displays relative to their programs and included the following: Crop Production and Improvement Program, Integrated Pest Management Program, Insect Collections,
Poultry and Broiler Productions, Aqua Culture Tilapia Production, Grafted Lemon Displays, and several types of potted plants.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency officer Laurie Talbo also graced the event. Talbo is currently stationed in Guam and flew to Rota for the event. Deleon Guerrero said Talbo was on Rota to also extend loan assistance to farmers and provide youth loan program information for all 4-H Club eligible members.
Tinian veterinarian and livestock expert Sabaldica also conducted a workshop on March 28 entitled “Small-Scale Poultry Production and Alternative Livestock Enterprise; Egg and Meat Production” for the people of Rota.
The workshop, according to Deleon Guerrero, brought interested individuals together from the community to learn the proper way of raising and maintaining poultry production. There were over 20 participants that attended the workshop.
The project was a collaborative project between the NMC-CREES and the Department of Lands and Natural Resources to assist individuals interested in poultry production and to lessen the dependency on imported products.
