Good news to returning military troops. The Public School System has acquiesced to them teaching in the Commonwealth’s learning institutions while completing college studies.

Retiring Commissioner of Education Rita H. Inos announced last week that the PSS has developed an innovative program called the Troops-to-Teachers Program that will provide both work and study opportunities for the CNMI’s very own returning troop members.

“We are recruiting up to 20 young men and women who have completed their military obligation and wish to work in our public schools,” said Inos.

Inos said that what the Central Office is offering is a program that provides the opportunity to serve as a part-time tutor working in the Commonwealth’s public elementary schools while attending college full-time.

All interested returning military personnel are encouraged to apply at the PSS Federal Programs Office, 3rd floor of the Retirement Fund Office up on Capitol Hill.

Applying for the Troops-to-Teachers Program will only require interested individuals to complete the PSS job application form, provide proof of U.S. citizenship or nationality, and provide a copy of their DD214 as their military service record.

They are also required to furnish the PSS Federal Programs Office a copy of their resume or curriculum vitae, police clearance and one-page essay on why they want to become a teacher at PSS.

The deadline for submission of all Troops-to-Teachers applications, together with the required documents, is April 21.

PSS Federal Programs Advisor Tim Thornburgh said his office has been receiving a number of calls from military personnel who have returned from service.

Thornburgh said the program was approved by the U.S. Department of Education since March and is expected to give extra income for the troop members while they fulfill their college education here in the CNMI.
