The CNMI Superior Court has imposed a $10,000 cash bail on a man who was arrested for allegedly throwing a rock at a female companion.

At a bail hearing last Friday, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho imposed a $10,000 bail on Yuyan Zhang, 47, who was arrested for slapping, punching, and throwing a rock at a woman. Court documents did not indicate the relationship between Zhang and the victim.

Zhang is currently charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.

After his bail hearing, Zhang was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections and was ordered to return to court on April 16 at 10am for a preliminary hearing, and on April 20 at 9am for his arraignment.

Zhang was represented by assistant public defender Jean P. Nogues while assistant attorney general Coleen St. Clair appeared for the government during Friday’s hearing.

According to court documents, a witness told police that he saw Zhang holding the victim by her hair with his left hand and slapping her with his right hand. The witness also said he saw Zhang punching the victim on the chest.

The witness told police that he thought Zhang “was done [assaulting the woman] because he walked away,” but then he picked up a rock and threw it at the victim.

According to the witness, Zhang punched the victim again twice in the face, and that’s when the witness pushed the defendant away from the victim.

Police said they were not able to speak with the victim as she was intoxicated and had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage from her breath.

The victim had a small scratch on her bottom right lip, police added.
