13 sites on Saipan red-flagged

The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality has red-flagged 13 sites on Saipan and is advising the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of this location for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.

The sites red-flagged are San Roque School, Plumeria Hotel, Aqua Resort Club, Tanapag Meeting, Central Repair Shop, Sea Plane Ramp, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Garapan Fishing Dock, Garapan Beach, CK Dist. 2 Drain, CK Dist. 4 Drain, Chalan Piao Beach, and Hopwood School Beach.

Samples collected from this beach contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci) that exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.

BECQ analyzes water samples collected from Saipan’s recreational beaches and storm drainage every Tuesday. For more information, contact DEQ at 664-8500. (BECQ)
