Over 250 animals spayed and neutered

The low-price spay and neutering offered by the Saipan Mayor’s Office over a week ago successfully treated over 200 animals.

According to Saipan Mayor David M. Aptang, there were about 250 dogs that were spayed or neutered, but he was not exactly sure how many cats were treated during the spay and neutering campaign.

Apatang said he had estimated the treatments of 500 animals during the low-cost spay and neutering, but that goal was not met.

Apatang remained optimistic and said if funding permits, he aims to bring back the service next year.

Although the turnout for the week-long spay and neutering was not what he had originally anticipated, Apatang said the event still turned out great because a big chunk of pets and strays (under the care of the mayor’s office animal shelter) were neutered or spayed, which in turn can lessen the population of stray animals.

The office had gone as far as flying in trained veterinarians from Dallas, Texas. The veterinarians were from a non-profit organization called Spay Neuter Network.

Apatang said he was impressed with the Spay Neuter Network team’s performance because they were both quick and efficient.

The mayor aims to recruit another professional spay and neutering team next year, but from a place closer to Saipan to cut back on the expenses.
