500 Sails sets volunteers meeting
500 Sails invites prospective volunteers to learn about opportunities to be part of the movement to restore widespread participation in traditional Chamorro and Carolinian canoe construction and sailing in our islands.
The meeting will be held at the Guma Sakman (canoe house) on Thursday, May 25, at 5:30pm. The Guam Sakman is on the beach, directly across from Marianas High School in Susupe.
Volunteer opportunities include teaching or assisting sailing, swimming, canoe construction, cultural instruction including language and history, as well as event planning and facilities enhancement and maintenance.
Volunteers will become members of the growing community of practitioners of traditional maritime activities in the CNMI that will improve our lives and our islands in many ways—from improved mental and physical health through healthy activities, to transportation to nearby islands, access to our near and off-shore fisheries, enhancing our islands as a tourist destination and creating new employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. Volunteers also will be among the first to build and own their own canoes.
The format of the meeting is informal, with a short overview of 500 Sails and the volunteer program, and staffed tables where participants can get details about various volunteer opportunities and sign up to be volunteers.
