5th Wahoo in the Marianas postponed due to rough weather

The anticipated 5th Annual Wahoo in the Marianas fishing tournament that is organized by Tasi To Table is being postponed due to rough weather conditions, but organizers are still looking forward to carry on with the event as soon as the safety to all participants can be assured.

Gene Weaver, who is president of youth fishing nonprofit organization Tasi To Table, said in a statement yesterday that rough weather conditions on the water are expected this weekend, “so for the safety and enjoyment of all participants, we’ve made the tough decision to postpone the derby.”

The annual fishing derby, organized by student members of Tasi To Table, is held to generate revenue for the non-profit’s eight-month student program.

The prizes this year will remain the same at $2,000 for first place; $1,500 for second place; $1,000 for third place; and $500 for total weight (total weight of your three heaviest non-placing wahoo).

Registration will take place the day before the event, which is traditionally held at the Smiling Cove Marina. Fees are $200 per boat consisting of one boat captain and two anglers, and $30 for each additional angler.

As the rescheduled date of the event is to be announced soon, the public is encouraged to keep an eye out for announcements by following Tasi To Table on Facebook and Instagram @Tasi To Table.

“Thank you to everyone for understanding and your support of Tasi To Table. We will announce a new date for the WIM soon,” said Weaver.

Last year the MV Gloria II, captained by John T. Sablan, won the $2,000 first prize after reeling in a 29.2-lb wahoo. In second place were the Salty Bandits with captain Masaki Kitami and crewmembers reeling in a 28.5-lb catch, and securing them the second prize of $1,500. And coming in third was Y-Knot of captain Alexandro Castro Sr. with a wahoo weighing at 27.7 lbs and took home $1,000.
