6.2 magnitude earthquake jolts east of Rota

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred 86 miles east of Rota yesterday morning, but there were no reports of damage to property, nor did it cause a tsunami threat.

A Rota police officer told Saipan Tribune that he did not feel the shaking and that there was no reported damage to property or injuries on the island.

On Saipan, some residents felt the jolt and even evacuated their offices for a few minutes.

Liza, 25, said that, although she did not feel the earthquake, she saw some employees of a government agency in Dandan gathering outside their office because of the jolt.

According to the CNMI Joint Information Center, the earthquake, which had a depth of 26 miles, happened at 9:14am and that some areas may have experienced shaking.

“Be observant and exercise normal caution if you are near or in the ocean…otherwise no action is required. No tsunami impacts are expected,” the information center said.
