The Marianas Federation of Teachers is urging the CNMI government to introduce a local sales tax as a way to generate additional revenue.

Officials from the organization sought audience with Commissioner of Education Rita H. Inos to discuss their proposal with the Public School System.

Its vice president, Franklin Keiper, said the proposal is to introduce 3-5 percent sales tax.

“The sales tax would cost everyone to give a little bit to help a lot,” he said.

“The PSS has instituted a policy where people can give to schools. This (the sales tax) would include everyone and will give everyone the chance to pay a little bit to come with a lot. It would be a great help for the government,” he added.

Keiper maintains that this proposal is one of the series that his group would share with the PSS.
