MHS works on accreditation

Seeking to upgrade its accreditation, the Marianas High School gathered teachers, students and parents recently in a workshop aimed at consolidating efforts toward achieving a six-year accreditation.

“The major task is for teachers being able to state what they are doing and being able to tell how they know that students are learning through observable evidence,” said MHS Principal Jim Denight.

MHS was last evaluated by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1996. Another team is due in April.

The workshop was held to measure how much the school has progressed in its reading program, which forms a vital part in the accreditation.

MHS had launched “Reading Across the Curriculum” at the start of the school year to fulfill the accreditation requirement.

MHS Vice Principal Ann Quick is confident MHS can hurdle the evaluation.

“We’d like to get six years. We have come a long way toward achieving it,” she said.
