Symposium aims to gather 100 students
A youth symposium set on Dec. 19 will gather 100 high school students in the CNMI over a discussion about diverse culture and with the hope to dictate future policies.
Of the number of participants, 50 will come from the Marianas High School. The rest will come from Tinian, Rota and private schools on Saipan.
“The MHS has taken a lead role because they do have cultural literacy classes,” said symposium coordinator Francis Sablan. However, students from private schools are interested to join the discussion on cultural diversity.
The whole-day affair is expected to outline recommendations in addressing the diverse cultures in school campuses and issues arising from it. With the institution of the CNMI Youth Congress, organizers are optimistic that recommendations will result in appropriate policies.
“If it becomes a public law, there will be policies that will be made through the Board of Education for PSS and basically will affect the other schools,” Sablan added.
This is the third of a series of youth symposiums participated in by the Public School System, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and the Division of Youth Services.
The first two forums were made possible with the help of Pacific Resources for Education and Learning.
