NMHC ready to select housing applicants
Up to 100 applications were received by the Northern Marianas Housing Corporation on Monday for its Koblerville housing project.
The number has doubled since the agency decided to extend the deadline for the submission of applications. But the figure is still low compared with the 400 applications that were picked up from the agency.
When NMHC set the first deadline last Oct. 15, only 51 applications were turned in.
NMHC corporate director Marylou Ada said some of the applicants got confused with the first deadline; others still have to meet some of the requirements.
But with the present number, the agency does not see a need for another extension because it can now select the 45 qualified applicants for the project.
NMHC has already started processing the applications for those who are eligible for the project. Drawing of the lots has been scheduled for Dec. 15, 16 and 17.
Five applicants will qualify for the two-bedroom house, 25 for the three-bedroom house and 15 for the four-bedroom units.
The 45 applicants can choose from 19 housing models, and they can work with the contractor for the housing design.
The project is expected to begin soon.
Local officials have been looking at the construction industry to somewhat alleviate the current economic slump. The project is expected to benefit small contractors who are getting the brunt of the ongoing crisis.
