NMC enrollment up
A steady increase of student enrollment was recorded at the Northern Marianas College for the past three years.
Contained in its 1997-1998 annual report, the college had more than 1,500 students enrolled three years ago. It continued to go up and registered over 1800 student population in school year 1997-1998.
Based on its records, the Chamorros are attending NMC for their post-secondary education. They led the pack with some 1,000 students enrolled. They were followed by the Asians with close to 400. The Carolinians came in last with 129 students.
Over the past two school years, NMC has witnessed more than 200 graduates. Previous counts were only a little over 100 graduates. School year 1996-1997 saw the highest number of graduates, with 251 degrees and certificates being awarded.
According to its President Agnes McPhetres, NMC also acted more than an academic institution for post secondary education with various programs pursuing other needs.
She cited programs like the Aqua-culture Research and the Business Development Center which assisted local economic development projects.
The college also led efforts to offer graduate school for students on-island with its tie-up with the San Diego State University. Both teaching staff of PSS and NMC benefited from this program.
Its federal funded Adult Basic Education, which offers the General Educational Development, offered members of the community another chance to earn their high school diplomas.
