Guerrero wins battle of Aces
Jack Guerrero shot a net 72 to defeat 10 other qualifiers and emerge the Ace of the Aces for 1998 in the Amigos Golf Club tournament at Laolao Bay Gold Resort’s West Course.
Fifteen linksters took to the course to participate in the year-end event. The 12th qualifier was sick and unable to participate. This has been Guerrero’s second Ace of Aces. He won his first in 1995.
Guerrero, who qualified for the club’s final golfing event of the year by winning the July Ace tilt, toured the airways with a gross 84. His 12 handicap gave him a low net 72 to finish even par and become the third recipient of the Ace of Aces award. Til Cabrera won the Ace in 1996 and Alex Aquinongoc in 1997.
“With only seven pars and no birdie — I didn’t think I would win,” said Guerrero. Plus there were two ladies who were supposed to be heavy contenders. I don’t know what happened to them. But I can’t complain — I wont. I look forward to defending my title next year.”
Runner-up Rudy Sablan shot a gross 86 — 13 handicap — for net 73, to trail Guerrero by one stroke. Joe Lizama followed with a gross 78 — 18 handicap — for net 75.
Til Cabrera, the December Ace and Anne Pickelsimer, the November Ace, suffered setbacks by crashing in the front nine holes as most participants did in the Dec. 13 event. No one offered any excuses.
Other winners were:
•Yasu Irinaka (front low net); Rudy Sablan (back low net); and Jack Guerrero (overall low net).
•Yasu Irinaka and Rudy Sablan (tied for most birdie); Joe Lizama (most par); Jack Guerrero (most bogey) and Annie Pickelsimer (most double bogey).
•Dave Igitol (closest to pin 7); Jack Guerrero (closest to pin 13); and Joe Lizama (closest to pin 17). No greenie for hole 3.
