Safety priority at Saipan seaport
With the grand opening of the Saipan Harbor just a few months away, Commonwealth Ports Authority firefighters are working to make sure everybody working at the seaport knows their role in the fire prevention program.
Beginning in midDecember, the CPA Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit embarked on a plan to train seaport tenants and port employees on how to properly use a fire extinguisher and what to do in the event of a fire emergency.
ARFF Chief Stanley Torres says the goal of the training is to prepare people to effectively head off a potential crisis, “Even small fires tend to make people panic; our goal is to get people properly trained so that they’ll have the knowledge to act quickly and confidently.”
Torres continued, “These basics, which can be used by anyone, are essential to any fire safety program. Knowing what to do, and who to call, will save lives and protect property — it’s as simple as that.”
The onehour course will be held each Tuesday, until all of the more than 200 seaport tenants and staff successfully complete the training.
The basic fire safety course also brings CPA in compliance with US Coast Guard regulations. Next month, the ARRF unit plans to conduct similar training at the Saipan International Airport.
