Experts tapped in economic study
Five individuals and partners, who are considered experts of their chosen fields, will join the NMI Economic Study in constructing a forecasting model for the Commonwealth.
Out of the number of proposals submitted to the sub-committee for contractors, its members named Don Farell, David Burger and Coleman, Robert Rodulph, a team from the University of Guam and Dr. Dick Conway, who will pursue respective areas in the study.
According to study coordinator Jack Peters, candidates were selected based on recommendations made by the CNMI Economic Steering Committee and the sub-committee chaired by Rep. Oscar Babauta.
“We have people who are experts in both general and minute areas that would fit in to our job,” he said for this team of local and outside talents.
Consulting from Tinian, Farell will provide the committee with the historical perspective and federal territorial relations.
The accounting firm of David Burger and Coleman, who have made previous studies for the Hotel Association of Northern Mariana Islands as well as the garments industry, is tasked to develop tax incentives for new and existing industries.
Rodulph, who is also from the CNMI, will help the economic team with his recent work on the Turner study. The previous work of Adam Turner made in 1994 that looked into the impact of the industries in the CNMI is currently being updated to include the economic effects of hosting people coming from the Federated States of Micronesia and contract workers. Its updated figures are critical to the study.
David O. Brien, a professor of finance and economics from the University of Guam, lead the team of three other professors who will handle the areas of human resources, banking and other economic reforms.
Coming from Seattle, Washington, Dr. Dick Conway will lend his expertise on projection and simulation models. He developed the forecasting model for Hawaii years back and is reportedly being used up to these days.
Peters said project manager Malcolm McPhee will gather inputs from various areas of specialization into a comprehensive study to be presented at the CNMI Economic Summit in March.
