Judge sets $2,500 bail in immigration fraud
Superior Court Judge Juan T. Lizama has set a $2,500 cash bail for the temporary release of a man arrested on charges of employment of illegal worker, harboring illegal alien, immigration fraud, perjury and false statements.
Kwok Man Wong, 58, appeared in court last Friday to face the charges brought by Assistant Attorney General Aaron Williams. The same charges were filed against Man On Enterprises Inc. where Wong works.
Williams said Wong and Man On employed four foreign workers identified as Qiong Xiao Lao, Hong Li, Dao Qian Zhang and Ai Mei Lu, knowing that they did not have lawful documentation and authority to be employed. The defendants also tried to conceal or shield from detection one of the illegal workers named Lu.
Documents showed Kwok and Man On Enterprises allegedly manufacture an employee’s employment certification to secure or support an application for any commonwealth immigration or labor benefit, knowing the document was false, forged and tampered.
Kwong also allegedly made false statements to authorities during the course of the investigation.
Immigration officials conducted a raid on the premises of Man On Enterprises last October and found workers who are illegally employed by the garment firm. The authorities arrested the workers and confiscated garments at Man On’s premises.
Williams said Kwok is facing 17 years in jail for three of the felony charges.
Williams also filed criminal charges against the workers who were found illegally working at the garment factory but it was only Lao who appeared at last Friday’s bail hearing.
The two others were still at large, Williams said.
Lao, along with Li and Zhang were charged with unlawful employment by an alien and perjury.
Lao was released to a third party custodian. She and Kwok were ordered to return to court on Jan. 25 for their arraignment.
