The Public School System will conduct the youth risk behavior survey (YRBS) in the CNMI to help determine practices which are considered at risk and help identify education programs in addressing these habits.

Sponsored by the HIV/AIDS program of PSS, target respondents are students from grades six to 12.

From the survey, PSS can identify health risk behaviors which cause mortality, morbidity and social problems. From alcohol to drug use, respondents will also be asked about their sexual behavior.

One class period is needed to complete the questionnaire containing multiple-choice questions.

According to the PSS survey information, the YRBS was approved by the state and local officials, and enjoys the support of various parent and teacher groups across the country.

Since some of the questions maybe considered as sensitive, the survey procedure is designed to protect the child’s privacy that allows anonymous participation.

Even with its official endorsement, the decision to participate in the survey is voluntary. It will not involve physical examination.

Data gathered from the survey will be used by the State Education Agencies (SEA) and Local Education Agencies (LEA) in achieving national goals on safe, disciplined, drug-free schools and health for the next millennium.

Locally, it can identify needs for the HIV prevention education and for the entire PSS health programs. It will provide accurate percentage of students who at risk of infection and similar health concerns.
