The Public School System has started its search for the brightest high school students in the CNMI to compete in this year’s Academic Challenge.

Last Saturday, the first preliminary round was held at the conference hall of the Joeten Kiyu Library where seven schools sent their best.

This first round also saw the return of the former champions from Grace Christian Academy who represented the CNMI during last year’s Academic Challenge in Florida.

But this year’s race is still considered as any body’s game, one PSS official said.

The schools like Mount Carmel School and Calvary Christian Academy, which didn’t participate last year, decided to field in their best students.

Schools will need to identify contestants who can well answer to the contest’s three categories: Mathematics/Science/Computer, Language/English/History/Current Events/Government/Geography, and Arts/Music/Humanities.

A second preliminary round is scheduled during the following weekend before the final selection takes place.

In the final showdown, the top six scoring contestants will join the CNMI team for the national competition.

The PSS is also hosting the junior high school academic challenge where two preliminary rounds are also scheduled before the final competition. However, only high school students can compete in the national Academic Challenge.
