The First Lady, Sophia P. Tenorio’s symposium to help Commonwealth families, entitled, “Healthy Families, Strong Community,” will be held this Saturday, March 6, 1999 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Presentations will focus on health topics that concern every family: diabetes control, prostate, breast and cervical cancer, parenting issues, teen pregnancy, and child development.

“I encourage the community to see their doctors at least once a year. The community is facing increasing health risks with obesity, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. This symposium will help bring the families together to discuss these issues and explain how a healthy family equates to a stronger community.” Mrs. Tenorio said.

The community will hear short presentations on various health risks, teen pregnancy, and child development issues, then have an opportunity to ask questions and visit various booths to learn more about high blood pressure, physical therapy, exercise, healthy foods and much more.

CHC staff will offer participants glucose-testing, blood pressure and assess risks for developing chronic diseases at the hotel beginning at 7:00 a.m. This service will help you know if you are at danger for diabetes and high blood pressure.

Free Child care will be provided for participants by the Division of Youth Services and Aging Program Volunteers.

It’s free and open to the public. Please call Women’s Affairs Office to register in advance. They can be reached at 288-4012 or 288-7365.
