Gun charge to be filed vs. inmates

The six prisoners who were charged with a federal offense were admitted yesterday at the Division of Corrections on Guam while awaiting trial for charges in connection with possession of firearm.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Rose Ada said the Director of the DOC on Guam informed Commissioner Charles Ingram that the six prisoners from Saipan arrived safely Wednesday afternoon and each one is assigned to a separate cell inside the facility.

Following Tuesday’s 14-hour hostage drama at the male detention center in Susupe, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms filed the charges before the US District Court against William Sablan, Vicente Aldan Jr., Jeffrey Celis, Ryan Babauta, Edwin Blas and Arcel Busto.

The six inmates who ransacked the security locker and took the Smith and Wesson 9-millimeter gun, fired four gunshots during the prison standoff. Persons who were previously convicted of felony and are caught in the possession of firearm will be charged with a federal offense.

According to Dave Wood and Gregory Baka from the U.S. Attorney’s office, prisoners who violate the federal law are incarcerated on Guam.

Contrary to reports which estimated the cost of the property damage at $100,000, Ada said the Department of Public Works is assisting DPS assess the total loss brought about by the hostage drama last Tuesady.

In another police report, a 13-year old female student from Hopwood Junior High School was hit by a car last Tuesday afternoon at Chalan Piao.

Ada said the victim got out from the Red Tag store and proceeded to cross the street.

Huei Yin Chang, 39, who was driving north using the inner lane, ran over the victim who sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

Meanwhile, DPS is reminding the public that driving motor vehicles of any type is not allowed on the beach. Boats and sea-craft should also be launched at designated area like at the Smiling Cove and Sugar Dock. Violators will be fined with $200 and/or will be imprisoned for a month.
